Empire is a census-designated place of about 4,000 residents in Stanislaus County, California. The town was founded as a navigation center for steamboats going up and down the Tuolumne River. It has since relocated from its original location to about a mile north centered around the crossing of Yosemite Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue. The community is directly east of Modesto and serves as an affordable bedroom community for the nearby industrial park and various farms and agribusinesses in the region.
